Choosing The Right Skincare Products: 3 Golden Rules To Live By

There are so many skincare products everywhere, each claiming to be the “best” in its area of specialization. If you are looking to create a regimen for you, selecting the right product can be a difficult task.

For one, looking at the dozens of products on the beauty shelves will have you trying to understand labels such as “clinical strength,” “maximum strength” and “original prescription strength.” That’s not to mention those brands that seem to contain the same ingredients but are priced differently. How do you know which one is right for you?

Know What’s In Them

Beauty products that are found over-the-counter often have the same active ingredients as the ones that are accessible only via prescription. However, the former will likely have a lower dosage and can be used freely with minor issues.

Take the example of anti-dandruff shampoo. Those that can be bought from the grocery will have ketoconazole at a lower dosage, usually at 1 percent. Meanwhile, shampoos that are labeled “prescription strength” will usually have 2 percent. The same can be said of anti-itch  products. Hydrocortisone is the common active ingredient among creams. Prescription-strength varities will commonly contain 2.5 percent, while store-bought variants will have 1 percent.

Don’t Be Easily Swayed By Promises

Labels don’t really tell the whole story, especially with over-the-counter skincare products. This is because the FDA does not really closely monitor them, at least not as much as the ones sold with prescriptions. The best way to see if you are truly getting the right dosage or “strength” is to read the list of ingredients. Compare the label with the other items and check the active ingredient and its percentage. We at ComplexionByDesign gave all our efforts in retailing  the right products to make your skin glow and healthy.

Dermatologists say that a mere 1 percent increase in the amount of active ingredient in a product can matter to your skin. If this is the case after you’ve done your comparisons, test a pea-sized amount of the product on your forearm first to determine compatibility. If no allergic reaction occurs, then you’re set to use it.

Which Skincare Product Is The One For You?

The stronger the dose, the more likely it can have a harsh effect on your skin. The smartest way to test a product is to start with a low dose. Check out the over-the-counter version first for at least two weeks so you can properly observe the reaction on your skin. If it seems to be working, you can test a product with a stronger dose. Better yet, consult a dermatologist so he or she can give you the right prescription.

Take note, however, that if you are looking for a skincare product to address your acne, results might not be evident until after 4 weeks. Overall, the smart way to deal with skincare issues is to see an expert. But, if your choice of OTC medications seem to be working, then all the best to you!
